Save Money Rebuilding Chisel, Cultivator Shanks CULTIVATORS Cultivators (58C) 13-2-27 Buying new replacement shanks for chisel plows and field cultivators can cost up-wards of $75 to $100 per shank.
Before you fork out that much money, check signals with machinist Bill Sand, of Langdon, N. Dak. He rebuilds them "better than new" for only $10 each (includes 1 bushings) for chisel shanks, and $7.50 each (includes 2 bushings) for field cultivator shanks.
You can ship worn shanks to Bill's shop to have them rebuilt or, if you're within driving distance, bring them in by appointment for "same day" service. Bill bores out the worn original mounting hole and inserts a heat treated, high carbon steel bushing ("lasts longer than stainless or cold rolled steel") which brings the opening back to original size.
If you have equipment to drill out the worn holes yourself, or have a local ma-chine shop that can do it, Bill will sell you "bushings only" at $5 each for chisel plows, and $3.50 each for cultivator shanks.
