Convert Older GM Vehicles To Electronic Ignition PICKUPS Modifications 25-2-41 It's easy to change an older model GM vehicle (pre 1973) to electronic ignition, eliminating the need to change points and rotor, says Pete Peters, Osler, Sask.
"Once you convert to electronic, they start and run better," says Peters, who made the conversion on a 1969 Chevy half-ton with a 350 engine. "I was tired of replacing points and looked into making a conversion. I discovered it was easy to do."
First, remove the old distributor and coil and then replace them with an electronic distributor from a 1974 or newer vehicle. Electronic distributors have the coil mounted on the distributor cap. Run a 12-ga. wire from the distributor to a fuse box terminal, which is live only when the ignition switch is turned on.
Adjust the spark plug gap to .045, remove the old spark plug wires and replace them with new high-energy wires. You'll also have to readjust the timing.
"This change will work on any older car, half-ton, or grain truck with a 305 or 350 engine," says Peters.
