Disc Closing Assembly Walks Over Trash FERTILIZER APPLICATION Fertilizer Application (58f) 20-3-12 This new "walking axle" offset disc closing assembly for anhydrous ammonia applicators or strip till units is designed to keep ammonia sealed in, even in the toughest conditions, says Quality Plus Mfg., Inc., Oelwein, Iowa. It consists of a pair of 17-in. dia. fluted coulters mounted on a "walking axle" that allows trash or rocks to pass through. The front coulter is about 9 in. ahead of the rear one. "The two discs are free to oscillate back and forth over rocks or heavy trash so they can go through virtually any conditions without plugging," says Dan Forsyth. "Whenever the lead coulter goes up, the trailing coulter stays down so the slot al-ways gets closed. It's built heavy with a weight of about 100 lbs. per row and the big fluted coulters turn easily so you don't have to run them more than 1 in. deep. The shallow cut helps reduce soil erosion on hill-sides. "The mounting bracket is designed for 1 by 2-in. C or S-tine shanks but can also be custom-fitted to other shanks, if necessary. The back side of the bracket always remains perpendicular to the ground and the rest of the assembly bolts onto it. To adjust coulter depth you simply change the position of four bolts."
