Tomb Setter Key To Sideline Business SPECIALTY/SERVICES Specialty/Services 24-1-22 Several years ago, Ira Dodd started a sideline business straightening tombstones for older cemetaries. After watching the retired machinist wear himself out doing the back-breaking work, his wife Carol told him there had to be a better way. Ira headed out to the shop and came up with the Tombstone Setter which lifts head stones up and sets them back down after the ground has been leveled.
Ira says the machine started out as a hydrostatic zero turn lawnmower. "I removed the mower deck and replaced it with a small dozer blade. Then I installed two eight ton, 360 degree hoists. Then I installed another 360 degree hoist on the right side that reaches over to the two lifts on front. The machine also has two 30-gal. water tanks with a high pressure pump. Then on the left side I placed a hydraulic driven cement pump."
Ira says the zero-turning ability of the machine is key because he often has little room to work. Hedoesn't plan to get a patent on his tombstone, and says it's okay for those interested to write and inquire with questions.
