Deere 5020 Repowered With Detroit Diesel Engine REPOWERED EQUIPMENT Repowered Equipment 23-5-36 Back in the late 1960's I bought a Deere 5020 used at a farm sale and promptly repowered it with a V-8 71 Detroit diesel engine that came out of a semi tractor. The tractor was originally equipped with an in-line 6-cyl. 130 hp diesel engine which I thought was too small. This is a big, heavy tractor and I knew that it could handle the extra power. I had a machine shop in Council Bluffs, Iowa, do the actual work. They equipped it with big dual mufflers that were designed for a semi tractor. The mufflers are painted black and really look nice against the tractor's green and yellow colors. Over the years I've used this tractor to pull a 45-ft. field cultivator, 25-ft. Kewanee disk, and 12-ft. dozer blade. The engine has a lot of torque at low rpm's and responds very fast. I paid $2,000 for the tractor and $3,500 for the engine.
