"Safety Retainer" Holds Shaft If PTO Breaks Loose POWER TAKE OFFS (PTO'S) Power Take Offs (PTO's) 23-3-3 "It's not a common accident, but I did lose a friend who was grinding feed when the pto shaft became dislodged from the gearbox and flew up and hit him," says Raymond Werner who invented a "safety retainer" to restrain pto shafts if they come loose.
The Winfield, Iowa, farmer's patent-pending invention consists of a steel retainer ring that fits around the pto shaft. It's fitted with a hinge and pin so it can be quickly removed. The ring has an arm attached to a mounting bracket that bolts to the implement.
Like the retainer ring, brackets come in various sizes to accommodate a variety of pto driven implements. They include feed wagons, grain augers, balers, mowers, grain vacuums, grinders, stalk shredders, conveyors and tiling machines.
