Husking Collars for new idea pickers COMBINES Corn Pickers(13) 9-4-32 Owners of New Idea ear corn pickers are beating a path to the door of Tom White's welding shop in Straughn, Ind., to get the new ribbed husking roll collars he's developed to prevent husking bed plug-ups.
"The problem is particularly acute for seed corn and popcorn growers because they have to harvest lots of small, pointed ears. And New Idea probably handles about 90% of the ear corn that's harvested," says White.
To solve the problem, White developed a ribbed collar to replace the standard smooth retaining collar at the lower end of the rubber husking roll where plug-ups usually occur. As the lodged ears move onto the rollers, the series of ribbed teeth chew off the tip end and allow the rest of the cob to fall into the elevator, eliminating plug-ups and excessive roller wear.
