"Robot" Vacuum Cleans House Automatically FARM HOME Houses 23-2-41 A new robotic vacuum cleaner works without a remote control or power cord.
Eureka's prototype "Robot Vac" consists of a 15-in. dia. smooth round disk with a snap-off lid for easy access to the filter bag. A microprocessor and radar act as eyes. The radar senses obstacles and then the processor decides which route to take, working around furniture legs, over electrical cords, and into corner areas. Because the vac is round, it turns on a dime to extricate itself from dead ends.
Once it finds an exterior wall, it hugs the perimeter of the room, completes a 360 degree circuit, then crosses and recrosses the room in a random pattern. It runs for about an hour and a half before needing recharging. The robot stores in a stand which recharges its batteries in about two hours.
