Where other types of coulters would warp, bend, or throw soil, these just roll right along with no problem," says Joe McIlhargey, Lucan, Ontario.
His spring steel coil shanks provide flexibility and always keep the coulter in line, working the soil evenly on both sides while providing constant down pressure.
McIlhargey uses the 17-in. dia. coulters on a home-built no-till coulter caddy which he also designed and built and now manufactures for sale. The caddy carries a 500-gal. liquid fertilizer tank and is pulled in front of a 6-row double frame Kinze corn planter. The coulters are arranged in three rows. Each coulter rides on a spindle supported by an 18-in. long coil spring stem that clamps onto the caddy toolbar. However, the coulters can be mounted in any configuration with both left and right hand models available. With one grease fitting per coulter (hub), maintenance is greatly reduced.
He came up with the idea because he wasn't satisfied with the performance of his 6-row Kinze double frame corn and soybean planter. The problem was that the coulters on front of the planter affected the performance of the row units on back, depending on how full the seed boxes and liquid fertilizer tank were. The caddy takes the weight of the fertilizer tank off the planter.
The coulters can be used on many types of equipment. "I have mounted them on a 3-pt. toolbar spaced 7 1/2 in. apart to incorporate liquid hog manure into wheat stubble. The coulters incorporate the chaff yet leave a lot of stubble standing to protect the soil," says McIlhargey. The coulters are patent pending. Manufacturing inquiries welcome.
