Meat Grinder Powered By Washing Machine Motor FARM HOME Food 22-4-40 Processing home-butchered meat is a plea-sure with this powered grinder, says Francois Bouvier, Moose Jaw, Sask., who used the drive train components off a Maytag wringer washing machine to operate a meat grinder that was originally designed to be hand cranked.
Bouvier stripped the washing machine down to the electric motor, gearbox, and shaft drive and made an angle iron frame to sup-port the components. He removed the crank from the grinder, then made a stub shaft that fits into a socket in the washing machine's gear assembly.
The grinder bolts to a sheet of 3/4-in. thick plywood covered by plexiglass.
"I've used it for years to make all my sausage," says Bouvier. "I use it a lot during deer hunting season. I use the original control lever for the washing machine wringers to operate the grinder. If the grinder plugs up I can reverse the auger. The washing machine's gear drive ratio is low enough that it'll grind up even frozen meat."
