Sensors mount on arms off to either side of the machine. They're able to actually determine the amount of chlorophyll content in the leaves. The data goes into a computer which instantly calculates the amount of fertilizer needed. That information runs through electronic controls that vary rate of application on-the-go.
The sensor-controlled applicator - designed primarily for spreading nitrogen on growing crops - was a joint effort of four European companies - Amazone-Werke, Massey Ferguson, Dronningborg, and Hydro-Agri.
