Low Profiel "Rotary" Head For Self-Propelled Forage Choppers FORAGE HARVESTERS Forage Harvesters (31F) 22-2-39 "Our new low profile head for self-propelled forage harvesters is equipped with self-sharpening rotary knives that cut off corn stalks and feed them into a cross auger, resulting in a positive feeding action without plugging up. The low profile allows the head to scoot right under down corn," says Cal Simenson, Murn Tire And Tool, Dodgeville, Wis. Simenson, who's a dealer for New Idea Uni-Systems, has been importing the Hungarian-built "Harvest Master" head for the past three years. It's available in either 38 or 30-in. 4-row models and will fit New Idea, Deere, and New Holland forage harvesters. (A 6-row 30-in. head is also available). "Low-profile rotary heads are becoming more and more popular because they cut faster and cleaner in grass and weeds and overall work much better than conventional forage heads," says Simonsen. "The Harvest Master is similar to the Claas rotary head but costs less. It's equipped with steel intermeshing gathering chains that squeeze and hold onto the corn stalk like two fingers squeezing a pencil, resulting in a positive action. Most other low profile forage heads are equipped with a belt-style gathering system that doesn't hold stalks tight, especially in down corn or corn with stalk rot. Another problem is that corn flops all over and the driver can't see where he's going. "The head is also equipped with poly lined gathering chain slides for long chain life with minimum wear."
