Hydrostatic 4-WD Tractor ATV'S ATV'S 21-6-18 About one and a half years ago FARM SHOW ran a story on a commercial-built "Tructor" manufactured by Robert Gibbons of Marion, Mass. (Vol. 20, No. 2). That 2-WD rig was powered by a 40 hp 4-cyl. water-cooled diesel and had a 4-speed synchromesh transmission. It was designed largely for Third World countries. However, North American farmers showed so much interest in it that Gibbons decided to design a bigger, heavier duty, 4-WD hydrostatic model.
The new T-4000 is equipped with a modular 3-pt. hitch and independent live pto that can be used either at the front or rear, 2,000-lb. capacity hydraulic-operated dump box, and three-passenger bench seat inside a ROPS cab. It's powered by a 49 hp water-cooled Kubota 4-cyl. diesel engine and has a Sundstrand hydrostatic transmission. Top speed is 25 mph. It has 34-in. high (9.50 by 16, 6-ply) front tires and 42-in. high (12.5 by 24, 6-ply) rear tires. Options include a Koyker front-end loader with 5-ft. bucket, dozer blade, snowplow, front and rear quick disconnect hydraulic ports for the 3-pt. hitch, front-mount snowblower, rotary broom, Cat. II hitch links, and a windshield and full cab with heater.
"The pto is an integral part of the modular 3-pt. hitch and comes off with it," says Robert Gibbons. "To mount the 3-pt. on front you pull four pins to remove the brush guard, then insert four pins to secure the hitch. The front axle is a 1-ton rated off-highway axle. We designed and patented a structure to house the 4-WD differential on the axle. It holds the axle and also allows it to pivot, allowing the entire vehicle to be more stable on rough terrain.
"The patented 3-pt. comes with a receiver hitch that mounts under the rear pto for pulling trailers. It can also be equipped with a drawbar that pins onto the lower lift arms for towing implements.
"The standard model sells for about $29,500. A lot of tractors in this price range have only about 35 hp."
