Trash, regardless of how heavy, won't hang or drag on the shanks," explains Austin Ryan, inventor-manufacturer of new-style minimum tillage shovels for chisel plows and field cultivators whose bottoms ride perpendicular to the ground.
"Their flat profile is the secret to their success," explains Ryan. "It provides minimum soil disturbance ù doesn't turn it over to bring wet soil to the surface. It also requires less horsepower, which means less fuel consumption."
Ryan has developed a handy twist-on method of attaching the shovels to special adaptors which bolt onto conventional shanks. "Unlike knock-on shovels, these can't come off. Yet, they're easy to twist on or off without a wrench or any other special tool," explains Ryan.
The hard-surfaced shovel (16 in. wide) sell for about $18 (U.S.), and the hard-surface bolt-on shank adaptors for about $7.00.
