It works great," says Mel Kuehn, farmer and manufacturer about his new fold-up wheel rake that goes from a 24-ft. field width to an 8-ft. transport width in seconds.
The big rake has two wings, each fitted with 6 independently mounted rake wheels which "walk" over obstacles in the field. To move the rake from field to transport position, you raise or lower the rake mechanically with a hand crank, pull a pin, and swing the wings inward. Optional hydraulics are also available to fold up the rake.
"Most existing big wheel rakes are mounted on a rigid frame and you simply raise them up in the air at an angle for transport so they're still too wide to get through gates or go down the road. Other rakes fold one behind the other but they're still 11 ft. wide," says Kuehn.
The Kuehn rake is fitted with 16-in. tires and transports down the road at 45 mph. Sells for $1,950 (mechanical fold) or $2,450 (hydraulic fold).
