Ramples Livestock Trailer Converts To A Flatbed WAGONS/TRAILERS Conversions 19-5-34 No ramp or livestock chute is needed to load this new livestock "dove-tail" hauler that converts to a flatbed to haul hay or machinery.
The trailer is 8 1 /2 ft. wide and available in lengths of 40 to 55 ft. A hydraulically-operated dovetail ramp on back lets you load and unload livestock from the ground without a chute. Load capacity is about 30,000 lbs.
"Wearing out a $25,000 to $30,000 pickup while moving loads that weigh only 10,000 to 12,000 lbs. doesn't make sense," says Johnny McElroy, manufacturer. "Our 53-ft. long trailer has 435 sq. ft. of floor space which is more than double the space in a 6 by 32 gooseneck trailer so it takes only half as many trips to move 150 head. It sells for $19,000. You can often buy a used semi single axle 2-ton semi truck for about $6,000 so your total investment could be as low as $25,000. A conventional 32-ft. gooseneck trailer sells for about $8,000 and requires use of a $22,000 pickup, making your total investment $30,000. And, you'll have a lot of depreciation on the pickup.
"One person can remove the racks in only about 15 minutes to convert to a flatbed. They slide off on rails and have 12 latches, 6 on each side. You unhook the latches and use a chain to secure the back end of the racks to a solid object such as a tree, pickup, etc., then drive forward letting the racks come to rest on the ground. To put the racks back on you use an up-front winch that can also be used to load tractors and machinery."
Options include inside ramps, fold-back funnel gates, divider gates, inside working lights, skid-resistant floor material, and a hopper bottom grain hauling package.
A model equipped with permanent racks that doesn't use any hydraulics is also avail-able.
